Gemsbok and calf at sunset
A Gemsbok with its calf on the dunes in the Walvis Bay region. Incorrectly called an Oryx. Oryx is the name of a genus that consists of 4 large species of antelopes. Scimitar oryx, Gemsbok, East African oryx, and the Arabian oryx.
This image was captured on the only guided safari we took on our trip. Our host/guide J.P. was truly fabulous and got us to some of the exceptional areas in these expansive dunes.

Happy New Year - Bald Eagle Lift Off
Bald Eagle on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Maryland
Wishing all family and friends a Very Happy New Year and good health in 2022.
Red-tailed Hawk
Red-tailed Hawk
Went to Cape Cod to photograph the Snowy Owls. Saw two male Snowys but they were not worth photographing. The background was awful so I did not capture any real keepers. This Red-tailed Hawk was a consolation.
Shore Birds
Sanderling at sunset
Though winter in New England is not the best time for shorebirds, last evening (December 26, 2021), a flock of Sanderlings were at the beach in Cape Cod. It is fun to watch them chasing waves as they break along the shore. A bit of trivia - a group of Sanderlings is called a "grain".
Snowy Owls
On a cold Christmas Eve
2021 is another year for some great Snowy Owl photography. Many beaches and open Tundra-like areas have them roosting during the day and hunting in the evenings. They typically stay through the winter and return north in the spring.
What was that?
Just checking.....
A View from Dante's View
Dante's View Sunset
Dante's View is a viewpoint at 5,476 ft on the north side of Coffin Peak, along the crest of the Black Mountains, overlooking Death Valley. This was sunset on the very last evening of our trip before heading to Las Vegas for our return flight.
After the Rain
After a hailstorm and a lot of rain, the Badlands look like they have been given a fresh coat of color. This is an image taken from the loop road looking down into the formations. I was awed by the intensity of the reds.
Badlands, SD.
Captured with the Panasonic Lumix S1R and the Lumix S-Pro 24070 f/2.8 lens. Exposure triad:f/13, 1/13 sec, ISO 100.
Milkyway in the Badlands
While at the Photographic Society of America conference/festival in Rapid City, South Dakota I had a few opportunities to get out to the Badlands. The Badlands are situated about 85 miles East of Rapid City if you use the far entrance (the more scenic entrance). This is a night adventure to photograph the Milkyway in one of the darkest sky regions of the USA.
If you wait for the clouds
This first image was the scene earlier this month in the Badlands, SD. The layers of the formations were interesting but there was just no separation and the tones just merged into each other. However, as the clouds blocked the sun and shadows came across these layers the separation was very pronounced.
I waited for quite a while hoping to get distinct and complete layers with alternating light and shadow. Well, patience does pay off, and here was the result.
A Nuthatch Dive..........
I find Nuthatches to be fascinating birds. They spend so much time facing down, and the swift movements are fun to watch. This was a dive down to where there were some sunflower seeds. A quick grab and they are gone before you know.
Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota
On my second last day in South Dakota while exploring Spearfish Canyon, I had to wait quite a while for the crowds of tourists and wedding photographers to clear so I could get a decent spot to capture this image of Bridal Veil Falls.
Photographed with the Panasonic Lumix S1R and the S Pro 24-70 f/2.8 lens. In addition, I used a Breakthrough Photography polarizer and a 3 stop ND filter (screw-on)
